Ignore critical reviews…this is a great watch.
Tool watch purist tools hate the Seiko 5KX series, or just find that negative Seiko reviews attract views on YouTube.

No it doesn’t have a sapphire crystal, neither did the SKX. No it isn’t 200M water resistant, it’s frigging 100M water resistant, same as the original Rolex submariner. No it doesn’t have a screw down crown or solid screw down case back, it has a hacking winding crown and a clear display case-back. No it isn’t an ISO certified diver. Tragic if you are a professional diver, of no interest whatsoever if you are not.

*Yes* it does have is a hack-able, wind-able movement!

Now that the inconvenient dated movement has been updated, I’m very happy and haven’t missed the lack of dive watch bona-fides even for a second. 100M of water resistance!!! This watch is fine for any aquatic adventures most of us will engage in, during this lifetime or the next.

I think Seiko should commended for thoughtfulness as far as decisions made about releasing this series in the Seiko 5 Sports line. I think they wanted to release an SKX-like new model as, obviously it was their most iconic design, probably second in all of watch-making to only to the Rolex submariner as regards recognizably. Re-design to current Prospex standards would run-up the price beyond the reach of everyman, which would have brought criticism that the days of affordable Seiko watches were over.

So to re-affirm a commitment to affordable watches, and taking into account that the SKX was was priced almost as a Seiko 5 Sports in disguise, they decided to insert the new release in in the Seiko 5 Sports line, and got so serious about it they even changed the tacky Seiko 5 logo in an elegant, clever way. It is unfortunate that so many Youtube reviewers, who didn’t have a clue about Seiko’s intent, went on to cast aspersions on the the 5KX.

Seiko 5 Sports watches meet certain specifications. These are somewhat more flexible that the original Seiko 5 spec, but usually include water resistance, 100M typically for later day desk diver styles, a display case-back, a shock resistant automatic movement, and day+date features. And, for recent releases, hacking, winding 4R3x automatic movement. Seiko’s intent does not personify evil, as many early reviews of the 5XK imply, it merely aims to meet the Seiko 5 Sports spec!

The case supplied is almost identical in shape and size to the original, but sans screw-down crown. There are actually at least 11 changes from the original SKX:
    1. Upgraded movement.
    2. Clean up of dial design, including surrounds for markers.
    3. Clean up, simplification of bezel, removing dots all round.
    4. Display case-back, rather than all metal screw-down type.
    5. Jubilee style bracelet no longer available, which IMHO is the only thing missing from the SKX.
    6. Addition of new Seiko 5 sideways S/infinity logo.
    7. Upgrade to add pinholes for easier bracelet removal/replacement.
    8. New pushpin shape and size creating some incompatibility with SKX compatible bracelets. New pushpins not as thick or robust as SKX pushins.
    9. Reportedly a slightly different sized gasket for display crystal.
    10. Downgrade to non screw-down crown
    11. No ISO certification.

Nevertheless, Seiko succeeds completely in recapitulating the original SKX visual design, retaining it’s „X“ factor, and arguably improving it. It’s the same extremely satisfying cushion style case, and Seiko keeps the marker shapes to retain their quixotic but undeniably appealing take on how, from a Japanese perspective, a dive watch dial should look.

It has the same Hardlex crystal as the SKX, which is not unscratchable, but hard to scratch, and which looks quite identical to a clear sapphire. The crystal can be replaced easily. A veritable cottage industry exists, making SKX & 5KX spare parts, including sapphire crystals, flat, domed, AR coated, whatever you want.

There are lately many homages to the SKX, some of which look like good values (notably a couple Chinese made knock-offs, with sapphire crystals and screw down crowns), but this is the Seiko original, and there is no similarly interesting visual design to be found on any other dive watch, save perhaps „the Sub“. These are the two dive watch designs have been proven through time. One is about $210.00, the other was about $250.00 in the early 60s, but, well, you can’t really even buy them new anymore, so good luck with that.

The bracelet on this one is utilitarian but very comfortable, and the case fits with superb smoothness on the wrist. It’s a gorgeous looking watch. I think most people will get tremendous satisfaction out of owning one of these.
I would strongly recommend picking one of these up. The decision to do so is the simplest no-brainer in the watch world.

    Muy recomendable
Increíble reloj. Me encanta su estética y su tamaño es perfecto para mi muñeca.
POor otro lado, creo que los segundos de adelanto o de atraso que se comenta que tiene este modelo son mucho menores.

great watch but easy to scratch
this is a great watch. right size, great price. also accurate. however i am unhappy with the fact that after 1 month there is a nasty scratch on the glass between the 12 marker and the 1 marker. for the price- one can not expect saphire crystal, but for a seiko one does not expect scratched glass on a diver’s watch

    Belle montre
Trop grande pour un poignet normal. Vu le coût celle-ci a été renvoyée par un point relais qui ne m’a pas remis de reçu et a ponctué à ma demande…elle arrivera quand elle arr
